Tom Cruise’s recent look in highly anticipated Digger movie has set the internet ablaze after the trailer release.

The Hollywood heartthrob looks unrecognisable in Alejandro G. Inarritu-directed movie, known for his hits like Birdman and The Revenant.

Earlier, Warner Bros has dropped the first trailer of the movie, where Top Gun star undergoes a dramatic transformation for his onscreen role in the new satirical dystopian comedy.

In a movie, Cruise, featuring a thick Southern accent, a pot belly and thinning white hair, stars as Digger Rockwell, a billionaire whose company has been ordered to fix an ecological disaster that could also initiate a nuclear war across the globe.

The first social media reaction has described the movie as “modern day Dr. Strangelove vibes,” “promising” and “classical masterpiece,” receiving praise for its eccentric plotline.

Many netizens and critics have predicted Tom as a strong contender for Oscar 2027.

One X user writes, “Wow finally!!! He is back… the trailer alone worth the Oscar nomination.”

“I see an Oscar on the horizon,” says another netizen.

Some other X user adds, “And the Academy Award for actor in a leading role goes to Tom ‘Digger’ Cruise.”

However, there are some faction in online community who believe that the movie is a “sequel to Dr. Strangelove”.

“You will make Kubrick and Sellers proud of you,” remarks a user, referring to director Stanley Kubrick and actor Peter Sellers, portraying the leading role in a 1964 movie.

Meanwhile, the ensemble cast comprises Cruise, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, Jesse Plemons, Sophie Wilde and Emma D’Arcy.

Diggers is set to release in theatres on October 2.
