Paris Jackson has opened up about the powerful role music played in helping her survive some of the darkest periods of her life, revealing it became her lifeline long before she achieved sobriety.

The 28-year-old singer, who recently marked six years sober, admitted music was the one constant that carried her through her struggles with drug and alcohol addiction.

Speaking in a Vogue Beauty Secrets vlog, Paris described music as "the air I breathe", explaining that its importance only became clearer after she stopped drinking and using drugs.

Despite being the daughter of late pop icon Michael Jackson, the model confessed she was initially afraid to pursue a career in music.

Although she had played guitar since her early teens, she kept it as a hobby until her twenties, when she realised she could no longer ignore what truly made her happy.

Away from music, Paris said rock climbing, photography and the support of close friends also helped her navigate some of life's toughest moments.

The singer has also spoken candidly about the person she became while battling addiction.

During an appearance on the Trying Not To Die podcast, she admitted alcohol stripped away the values she had been raised with, leaving her feeling "very vindictive".

Doctor Odyssey actress explained that kindness had always been a core part of her upbringing, but addiction made it difficult to live by those principles.

Looking back, Paris believes the warning signs appeared long before she ever touched alcohol or drugs.

She recalled struggling with self-harm and an unhealthy relationship with food as a child, describing a constant search for something outside herself that she now recognises as the early signs of addiction.
