Music legend James Taylor may have had a golden ticket to one of the biggest celebrity weddings of the year, but he decided to give it a miss.
The 78-year-old singer revealed he and wife Kim Smedvig were invited to Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s lavish wedding at New York’s Madison Square Garden.
Instead of joining the glittering guest list, he spent the Independence Day weekend doing what he does best and that was performing live for fans.
Speaking on stage at the Koussevitzky Music Shed in Tanglewood, Massachusetts, the Fire and Rain star surprised concertgoers by sharing the news.
“You know, Kim and I were invited to a wedding at Madison Square Garden tonight,” he told the crowd before offering a touching message to the newlyweds, “Happiness and smooth sailing.”
The warm tribute came just days after the Lover singer and NFL star, exchanged vows in a spectacular ceremony reportedly attended by around 1,000 guests.
Actor Adam Sandler is said to have officiated the star-packed celebration, with Hollywood favourites and sporting icons filling the venue.
For those unfamiliar, James’ connection to the pop superstar stretches back years.
The pair first met around 15 or 16 years ago while performing at a charity event for the Candie’s Foundation, when the songstress was still a teenager.
Recalling the meeting in a 2024 interview, James said the young singer told him she had grown up listening to his music and revealed her parents had named her with him in mind.
Their shared history didn’t end there.
The Opalite hitmaker later gave the legendary singer a lyrical nod in Begin Again, the closing track on her 2012 album Red, cementing the special bond between the two musicians.
Meanwhile, fresh details continue to emerge from the couple’s fairytale wedding.
Guests reportedly included Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone and Paul Rudd, while close friends Lena Dunham, Jack Antonoff and Abigail Anderson joined pre-wedding celebrations.
