Pop icon Madonna has opened up about her deeply personal relationship with daughter Lourdes "Lola" Leon.
The 67-year-old Queen of Pop revealed that the pair's first songwriting collaboration became a powerful step towards repairing their bond.
She made the emotional confession during an appearance on BBC Radio 1 with Graham Norton, where she discussed her upcoming album Confessions II and the special track she wrote alongside her 29-year-old daughter.
Madonna admitted Lola had always been hesitant to work with her famous mother because she feared people would assume she was benefiting from her family name.
"She approached me," Madonna explained.
"She's been very reticent to work with me. She doesn't want to be perceived as my daughter taking advantage of her privilege."
The Material Girl singer couldn't hide her admiration, insisting her daughter is the more naturally gifted vocalist.
"She has a much better voice than I do," the songstress said.
"She didn't ask for this... she came to me and said, 'Let's write a song together. I think it'll be a very healing experience.'"
The Popular hitmaker also revealed that Lola struggled with resentment during her teenage years as she dealt with what Graham Norton described as the "weird secondhand fame" of being the daughter of one of the world's biggest stars.
Rather than avoiding those difficult emotions, mother and daughter poured them into their songwriting, with Madonna saying they each agreed to speak honestly through the lyrics.
The Vogue singer described the experience as an important turning point, adding that she was "so happy" when Lola suggested writing together.
Lola, whose modelling career includes campaigns for Savage x Fenty, Burberry and Marc Jacobs, has also carved out her own music career, recently releasing her single T-Shirt.
