Idris Elba’s wife Sabrina Dhowre finally breaks silence on facing racial discrimination in London.
Sabrina, who is known for fighting racial injustice along with her husband Idris, takes to TikTok this week and expresses her disappointment after she reignites debate on racism.
In a video, the Luther actor’s wife alleges that she confronted a hostile driver a couple days ago who hit her car and then tries to change the narrative around “brown and black people” on being treated as “conditional citizens”.
What really upsets Sabrina was the tone and question she asked her at the time, “where are you from?” which had no connection with the incident.
“I think a lot of people know what that question means when they are asked in a tone,” says the Canadian model.
Sabrina alleges that the woman driver “was trying to change the terms of the interaction and suddenly it wasn’t about the fact that she had hit my car”.
She continues, “It was about whether or not I belonged enough to like hold her accountable.”
Sabrina opens up that this is the part that really bothered her which is why she decided to come and speak about because “racism isn’t always theatrical”.
Elsewhere in her video, the Hijack actor’s wife points out that the climate in the UK has changed over the years.
Sabirna shares that a country like UK “spends years publicly debating who belongs or who is really from here or who is too foreign, too demanding or like too ungrateful or too much of a burden… That language doesn’t ever stay abstract”.
Meanwhile, Idris’ wife slams the driver for questioning her rights to “question her” on the basis of colour as she drove away.
“This is what frustrates me that incidents can kind of get dismissed as like personality but misunderstanding is not just misunderstanding anymore”.
“It’s starting to feel like a pattern and what’s making people feel increasingly comfortable treating Black and brown people as conditional citizens as conditional neighbours of conditional Londoners,” concludes Sabrina.
