Idris Elba has finally shut down years of James Bond rumours, insisting he was never even “in the race” to become 007.
The 53-year-old actor had long been a fan favourite to replace Daniel Craig as the suave spy, with movie lovers and even former co-stars backing him for the iconic role.
But now, as Amazon/MGM officially begin the search for the next Bond, the Luther star says his name was never seriously in the mix.
Speaking to People, Idris laughed off the speculation, saying, “My name’s not getting thrown out, no way. They’re going younger.”
The Hijack actor added he’s excited to see who eventually lands the legendary role, insisting, “I wish them all the luck of the world. I can’t wait — it’s going to be amazing.”
Despite years of headlines linking him to Bond, he made it crystal clear he never considered himself a contender.
“I’m honestly not in the race ever,” he said.
“I wasn’t in the race in the first place.”
And it seems Idris isn’t the only star distancing himself from the tuxedo.
Taron Egerton has also poured cold water on rumours he could become the next 007, admitting he thinks he’s simply “too messy” for the part.
The Rocketman actor confessed he loves Bond, especially Daniel Craig’s gritty take on the character, but believes other younger actors would be better suited.
“I don’t think I’m a good choice for it,” Taron admitted, adding that leading the billion-pound franchise would be “quite an undertaking”.
For now, the hunt for Britain’s next superspy continues, but two of the internet’s favourite choices are officially out of the running.
