Rachel Zegler brought the house down at the 2026 Tony Awards with a heartfelt performance honouring 50 years of A Chorus Line, leaving the Radio City Music Hall audience visibly moved.
The 25-year-old actress took centre stage on Sunday night, delivering a stirring rendition of the beloved ballad What I Did for Love.
The tribute marked half a century since the iconic musical first opened at the Shubert Theatre in 1975, where it went on to become a record-breaking phenomenon with 6,137 performances.
It held the title of Broadway’s longest-running show until Cats overtook it in 1997.
A Chorus Line famously follows a group of dancers auditioning for a Broadway chorus, and its original run scooped a staggering nine Tony Awards in 1976, including Best Musical and Best Direction.
Zegler, who turned heads earlier on the red carpet in a sleek brown V-neck gown, was one of the night’s standout stars.
The West Side Story actress has been riding a wave of acclaim after her Olivier Award win for Evita in London’s West End earlier this year.
She is now set to reprise her role as Eva Perón when Evita transfers to Broadway next spring, directed once again by Jamie Lloyd.
Speaking about the project, Zegler called it a “once in a lifetime opportunity” and said she couldn’t wait to perform for New York audiences.
Composer Andrew Lloyd Webber praised her as a “generational talent,” while teasing a refreshed Broadway staging of the production.
The night also featured a surprise cameo from Webber himself alongside Anna Wintour during a playful Cats-themed segment.
