John Lithgow has added another remarkable chapter to his glittering career after becoming the oldest man ever to win an acting award at the Tony Awards.

The 80-year-old veteran star scooped the Best Actor in a Play prize for his acclaimed portrayal of author Roald Dahl in Giant, marking a historic night on Broadway.

The victory was made even sweeter as it came an incredible 53 years after his first competitive Tony Award win.

Taking to the stage, an emotional Lithgow reflected on his long journey in theatre.

“I’m such a lucky actor,” he told the audience, describing the award as one of the greatest moments of his career.

The Hollywood favourite first claimed Tony glory in 1973 for The Changing Room and later won again in 2002 for Sweet Smell of Success

His latest triumph means he joins an elite group of performers who have won Tony Awards in three different acting categories.

Lithgow fought off tough competition from a star-studded field that included Nathan Lane, Mark Strong, Daniel Radcliffe and Will Harrison.

The actor’s historic win comes during an especially busy period in his career.

He is currently filming HBO’s highly anticipated Harry Potter television reboot, in which he will take on the iconic role of Hogwarts headmaster Albus Dumbledore.

Elsewhere at the Tony Awards, Death of a Salesman emerged as one of the night’s biggest success stories, collecting six awards.

Laurie Metcalf secured her third Tony, while director Joe Mantello and the production’s creative team were also recognised.

In the musical categories, Ragtime enjoyed a triumphant evening, winning Best Revival of a Musical.

Joshua Henry and Caissie Levy picked up the leading acting honours, while Kai Harada was recognised for his outstanding sound design work.
