Mayim Bialik has opened up about a difficult and unexpected health ordeal after taking a GLP-1 weight-loss medication.

The 50-year-old actress revealed that just one injection left her battling severe side effects for weeks.

In a candid essay published on June 5, the former Jeopardy! host said she did not originally take the drug for weight loss.

But on the advice of doctors who believed it could help ease long-term symptoms linked to multiple autoimmune and chronic conditions she has struggled with for years.

The actress, best known for Blossom and The Big Bang Theory, explained that her health journey has included diagnoses such as Graves’ disease and other immune-related disorders.

After trying several treatments without success, she said three separate doctors suggested a GLP-1 medication for its potential anti-inflammatory benefits.

But what followed, she wrote, was far from what she expected.

After one low-dose injection, Bialik said she experienced extreme gastrointestinal distress, including severe bloating, cramping, vomiting and diarrhoea, leaving her unable to keep food or fluids down properly.

At one point, she required IV fluids after becoming dehydrated, and described barely managing to eat a few spoonfuls of rice and half a banana over two days.

While she remained in contact with her doctor throughout, the Beaches star said she was surprised to learn just how common intense side effects can be with GLP-1 medications, which are widely used for weight loss but known to cause nausea and digestive issues in some patients.

She ultimately stopped taking the drug and later saw a gastroenterologist, who told her the reaction.

While severe, was not unusual and could linger due to the medication’s long-lasting effects.

Despite the ordeal, she reflected on how deeply body image pressures still affect her, admitting she even noticed physical changes she had previously longed for during the experience.
