Brett Goldstein has led an outpouring of tributes after the death of his Ted Lasso co-star Anthony Head at the age of 72.

The actor, who played the scheming Rupert Mannion in the hit Apple TV+ comedy, died peacefully from complications related to pneumonia while surrounded by his family, according to a statement released by his daughters, Emily and Daisy Head.

Goldstein was among the first of Head’s former colleagues to share his heartbreak, remembering the veteran actor as the complete opposite of the villain he portrayed on screen.

“Anthony Head was a brilliant actor who played the worst person in the world,” Goldstein wrote on Instagram.

“Which was an incredible skill because he was the best person. Infinitely charming and kind and fun and a joy. He will be sorely missed.”

The touching tribute was quickly followed by messages from other stars who had worked alongside Head throughout his long and celebrated career.

Ted Lasso actor Jeremy Swift posted: “Goodbye Tony, we adored you. Rest in Peace my friend.”

Meanwhile, Buffy the Vampire Slayer star David Boreanaz paid tribute to the actor who famously played Rupert Giles, calling him “so kind and generous of a soul”.

Head was a familiar face on British and international television for decades, earning praise for his versatility and charisma both on and off screen.

While millions knew him as the wise and dependable Giles in Buffy, a new generation of fans embraced him as the charming yet ruthless Rupert in Ted Lasso.

In a heartfelt family statement, his daughters said their father considered himself “incredibly lucky” to have spent his life working with talented people and entertaining audiences around the world.
