Zach Braff has revealed he was determined to keep the long-awaited return of Scrubs “grounded”, after admitting the original show became increasingly “silly” in its later years.

The 51-year-old actor, who reprises his role as lovable doctor John ‘J.D.’ Dorian in the rebooted medical sitcom, said bringing the cult comedy back for 2026 was far more stressful than fans might realise.

Speaking on Variety’s Awards Circuit Podcast, Zach admitted there was huge pressure behind the scenes to strike the perfect balance between nostalgia and modern television.

He explained, “Launching the show and trying to thread the needle for what the show would be in 2026 was really complicated.”

The Garden State actor confessed the original series gradually drifted into more outrageous comedy during its eight-and-a-half-year run, and the creative team wanted to return to the emotional magic that made early Scrubs such a hit.

“There were a lot of chefs in the kitchen,” he joked, revealing producers were eager to satisfy Hulu, ABC/Disney, loyal fans and the cast themselves all at once.

Zach also admitted the pressure of directing the revival’s pilot episode left him especially anxious.

While stepping back into J.D.’s trainers felt familiar, sitting behind the camera was a completely different challenge.

“I was nervous directing the pilot. I really wanted to get it right,” he confessed.

The Hollywood star said fans are fiercely protective of Scrubs and would instantly notice if the tone felt wrong.

According him, the reboot still includes the fantasy sequences and emotional moments viewers love, but with a more “back-to-reality” feel.
