Matthew Perry’s mother has delivered an emotional statement ahead of the sentencing of his former assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, accusing him of failing to protect the actor during his battle with addiction.

In a victim impact letter obtained by PEOPLE, Suzanne Morrison said her family believed Iwamasa understood Perry’s long and public struggle with substance abuse and trusted him to act as a “guardian” in helping the actor remain sober.

Instead, she alleged that he enabled Perry’s drug use and repeatedly injected him with ketamine despite having no medical training.

Perry, best known for playing Chandler Bing on the hit sitcom Friends, died in October 2023 at the age of 54.

Moreover, authorities later ruled his death was caused by the acute effects of ketamine.

Morrison also criticized Iwamasa’s behavior following her son’s death, claiming he remained closely involved with the family, attended the funeral, and presented himself as someone who had tried to help Perry.

As per the outlet, she described the experience as a deep betrayal, writing that the family had “trusted a man without a conscience.”

Iwamasa previously pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute ketamine causing death and could face up to 15 years in prison at sentencing later this month.
