Stanley Tucci may be one of Hollywood’s most respected stars, but according to the actor himself, his mum still fears the phone could stop ringing at any moment.
The 65-year-old actor revealed his mother Joan remains anxious about his career despite decades of success, multiple Emmy wins and a string of blockbuster hits.
Speaking during a live taping of Josh Horowitz’s Happy Sad Confused podcast at New York’s 92NY venue, Stanley admitted his mum gets nervous whenever he takes time away from acting, especially after he recently stepped back to spend more time with his family.
The Devil Wears Prada 2 star shares twins Isabel and Nicolo, 26, and daughter Camilla, 24, with his late wife Kate Tucci, as well as Matteo, 10, and Emilia, seven, with wife Felicity Blunt.
He laughed as he recalled their regular phone chats, saying: “She asks, ‘So what are you doing?’
I tell her I’m spending time with the kids, taking meetings and doing charity work. Then there’s this pause… and I realise she thinks I’m never going to work again.”
But The Lovely Bones actor confessed he understands her fears because life in showbiz can be brutally unpredictable.
“You never stop worrying,” he admitted.
“A career in show business ebbs and flows.”
In a surprising confession, Stanley revealed he struggled professionally after the huge success of The Devil Wears Prada in 2006.
“After the first Devil Wears Prada, I couldn’t really get a job,” he said.
The Hunger Games star explained he turned down projects that felt creatively empty, even while juggling family pressures and caring for Kate during her illness before her death in 2009.
Stanley also revealed he rejected numerous cooking competition shows, insisting food should “bring people together” rather than create rivalry.
