Shakira has been left at the centre of a heartbreaking tragedy after a construction worker died while helping build the stage for her huge Copacabana beach concert.
The 49-year-old global superstar is due to perform on May 2 in Rio de Janeiro as part of the massive “Todo Mundo No Rio” event, a free show expected to pull in millions of fans.
But preparations have been overshadowed by the devastating accident.
Organisers confirmed the incident happened on Sunday afternoon, revealing a worker was fatally injured while assembling structures for the concert.
In a sombre statement, they said the accident “tragically claimed the life of a professional” on site.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene after colleagues freed the man from machinery involved in a lifting system.
Brazil’s fire brigade later confirmed he suffered severe crushing injuries to his lower limbs.
He was treated at the scene before being taken to Miguel Couto Municipal Hospital, but despite desperate efforts, he died shortly after arrival.
Event organisers said they are offering full support to the victim’s family and team, expressing “solidarity and comfort” in the wake of the tragedy.
Shakira has not yet spoken publicly about the incident.
The devastating news comes as the Hips Don't Lie singer rides a major career high, having recently drawn a staggering 400,000 fans to a record-breaking show in Mexico City.
