Mayte Garcia has recollected her sadness that occurred after the death of the Prince, the legendary music icon passed away 10 years ago.
The loss was compounded by the world-wide tributes. The 52-year-old dancer, got married to Prince in 1996 to the unversed, and remained married until 2000.
She told Us Weekly that she was driving at the time she got the news on April 21, 2016.
"I don't know how I drove home. I don't know how many nos I said," Garcia told while looking back.
The American actress went on to explain, "It was really hard, and I didn't want it to be true."
Prince was 57 at the time he died of an accidental overdose of fentanyl at his Minnesota home.
Garcia stated that it was tough to see the global tributes, such as landmarks lit purple, but eventually, it was "very impactful."
"It was an intense sadness. That's all I can remember of losing him," she noted.
Garcia reckons the artist of the Purple Rain would have been shocked and humbled by his long-lasting legacy.
"He knew how powerful his presence was, but I think he would have still been shocked and humbled. He was very, very humble," she said.
Today, ten years after his death Garcia told People she has switched her mourning to joy.
She described, "For a good five years, it was really harsh, just because it happened so suddenly."
Continuing, "Then it finally came time to realize, 10 years. I can't believe it's been 10 years. Life goes really fast."
After that she shared her healing journey, "Let's celebrate him. Let's have a day of playing music, unifying and showing the philanthropic side that he had."
The couple met when Garcia at a teen-age became her legal guardian for travel and tour purpose.
Garcia has disclosed that the power dynamics in their relationship was complex.
