Meryl Streep has shared her remarks on Melania Trump’s fashion choices during a recent promotional event for The Devil Wears Prada 2.
The three-time Oscar winner appeared on the Vogue cover with Anna Wintour and joined a discussion led by Greta Gerwig, focusing on how women in power use clothing to express themselves.
Addressing the former first lady, the actress said she had “so many thoughts about this,” and pointed to a widely discussed moment involving Melania Trump.
She continued, “The most powerful message that our current first lady sent was in the coat that said ‘I Really Don’t Care, Do U?’ when she was going to see migrant children who were incarcerated.”
“All dress is about expressing yourself, but we’re also subject to larger historical and political sweeps of expectation,” she added.
Furthermore, she reflected on broader expectations placed on women in leadership, stating she was “stunned at how women in power have to have bare arms on television while men are covered in shirts and ties or a suit. There’s an apology built into women. They have to show their smallness.”
Meanwhile, Anna also weighed in during the discussion, noting that a “power suit” is not essential in professional settings and referencing figures such as Michelle Obama as examples of personal, consistent style.
