Hilary Duff has broken her silence after the viral backlash over the risqué lyrics in her new single, Roommates.
The 38-year-old star, once the squeaky-clean Disney darling of Lizzie McGuire, revealed she was taken aback by just how shocked some listeners were, particularly longtime fans still clinging to her teen idol image.
The track, which references adult content, quickly became the talk of social media, with some fans left blinking at their screens.
Speaking on the Call Her Daddy podcast, Hilary admitted she hadn’t expected the reaction to be so extreme.
“One of the craziest comments I saw was like, ‘And do you do that in front of your children?’ And I was like, ‘No, what? Are you OK?’” she laughed.
Hilary, a mum of five, Luca, 13, with ex-husband Mike Comrie, and Banks, seven, Mae, four, and 21-month-old Townes with husband Matthew Koma, added that some had even speculated whether her kids sang along to the track.
“I’m not making music for my kids. I’m making music for myself. I’m making music for people like myself,” she insisted.
A Cinderella Story actress explained the song was designed to be “polarising,” capturing the emotional tension of a relationship teetering into roommate territory rather than being deliberately raunchy.
It's worth noting that Roommates features on Hilary’s sixth studio album, luck… or something, which she created alongside her husband.
