J. Cole has finally released his seventh and final double studio album, The Fall-Off with tracks that simulatenously cement and reflect on his legacy.

The highly anticipated record covers a variety of topics, from his love life to faith to his public image along with some eyebrow raising lyrics likely directed at his rap rivals.

Cole had previously revealed that the discs indicate his age and mindset shift from two similar trips to his hometown, only a decade apart and thus are indicative of his growth and life changes throughout the 10-year time period.

The artist starts off strong with Two Six, paying homage to his hometown and setting the tone for the first half of the album, which comes across as blunt and sharp.

It accurately reflects his youth, struggle and spirit during a time that he described as a “crossroads with the 3 loves of my life; my woman, my craft, and my city.”

Meanwhile Disc 39 slows things down from the very first track, getting groovier than the first half with more laid-back beats.

Cole surprisingly raps his entire life backwards right after the intro on The Fall-Off Is Inevitable, tracing his life from death to birth in a single unbroken reverse-chronology.

Also in the latter half, the 41-year-old raps as both The Notorious B.I.G. and Tupac on What If, reflecting on their feud from the former’s point of view in the first verse and the second’s in the latter half respectively.

Notably, early reviews of the The Fall-Off from hip-hop fans on social media as well as via media outlets are positive, as they praise the lyricism, versatility and storytelling.
