Rachel McAdams made history with pop culture as the malicious Regina George, however, Mean Girls almost would have been a totally different film to the actress.

The 47-year-old in a new interview with People confides that she had originally auditioned to play Cady Heron, the clueless high school outcast eventually portrayed by Lindsay Lohan.

McAdams was 25 years old at that time, and a newcomer, “I remember thinking, ‘This is a futile exercise. I will never be hired for Cady,’”

Notably, this was her first main character, she added “I was just starting out,” adding, "I just did not think I was at that point in my life where I would be chosen for that. So I just kind of went in and had fun.”

The native of Ontario recounted her longing to be part of Tina Fey film in any way possible.

“I loved the script so much. I remember closing that script and calling up my manager and saying, 'Please, even just playing a character that has one line I would take.’”

However, director Mark Waters viewed her in a different, saying, “You’re too old to play Cady, but you’re just right for Regina,” he said. 

“Regina has been around the block a few times and maybe has a, I don't know if I'd call her an old soul, but she's got a few more miles on her than Cady." 

Mean Girls became a box office hit in April 2004 and this event was the initiation of McAdams’ career.
