Olivia Rodrigo has marked a major milestone in her career by unveiling a surprise cover of Drivers License by Talking Heads legend David Byrne.
Notably, five five years after the song changed her life forever.
The 22-year-old pop superstar is celebrating the fifth anniversary of her blockbuster debut album SOUR, and she’s roped in what she calls her “favourite artists ever” to reimagine tracks from the record.
Kicking things off in style, Byrne, 73, has put his own unmistakable spin on the heartbreak anthem that first launched Olivia into global stardom.
The unlikely but brilliant collaboration comes after the pair teamed up last year for a show-stealing performance of Burning Down the House at New York’s Governors Ball.
That duet now appears as the B-side on a special limited-edition 7-inch vinyl, alongside Byrne’s Drivers License cover, which is already available to pre-order from the songstress’s official store.
Taking to Instagram, deja vu singer admitted she was overwhelmed by the tribute, revealing she “actually cried” when she first heard David’s version of the song.
Reflecting on the anniversary, she described Drivers License as the track that “totally changed my life,” adding that she still feels stunned by its impact.
Psycho Killer hitmaker, meanwhile, has spoken warmly about their friendship, explaining how he first became a fan after seeing Olivia perform at Madison Square Garden.
He praised her powerful connection with her audience and joked that working with her left him having to “pinch himself”.
Five years on, the song is still hitting hard and with David on board, it’s found a whole new way to break hearts.
