Ben Affleck has revealed the awkward pain of missing out on a Best Director nomination for Argo at the 2013 Oscars.

Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on Monday, the 53-year-old star recalled how everyone had told him he was a shoo-in for the award.

“It was the year, the horrible thing of everyone telling you, ‘You’re gonna get nominated, you’re gonna get nominated for director,’” he said.

“And so, of course, I wake up that morning… and all of a sudden, it’s a massive embarrassment. People said, ‘You didn’t get nominated.’”

Kimmel drew parallels with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Critics’ Choice loss to Timothée Chalamet, joking that stars sometimes “come to lose.”

Affleck admitted he had felt similarly when fielding red carpet questions about the Argo snub in 2013.

“It seemed like there were 500 people dying to talk to me. Every single one of them said, ‘Hi, so the snub.’ What do you say to that? ‘Ha, ha, ha, yeah. It’s a bummer,’” he laughed.

The Good Will Hunting actor has now reunited with childhood friend Matt Damon in the new action thriller The Rip, praising his longtime pal’s understated acting style.

“Every time I act with Matt, it’s a humbling experience… He is really a master of realism,” he told GQ
