Sean “Diddy” Combs is firing back at Netflix over its upcoming docuseries Sean Combs: The Reckoning, which premieres Tuesday, December 2.
A spokesperson for the hip-hop mogul slammed the series, calling it a “shameful hit piece” and alleging that the streamer relied on stolen footage never cleared for release.
“As Netflix and CEO Ted Sarandos know, Mr. Combs has been amassing footage since he was 19 to tell his own story, in his own way,” the statement reads. “It is fundamentally unfair, and illegal, for Netflix to misappropriate that work.”
The statement also criticizes Netflix for sensationalizing Combs’s life, claiming private material, including conversations with lawyers, was taken out of context.
“No rights in that material were ever transferred to Netflix or any third party,” the spokesperson added.
Combs’s team took aim at the decision to give creative control to Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson, whom they described as “a longtime adversary with a personal vendetta.”
The statement emphasized the personal betrayal felt by Combs, noting that Netflix ignored the trust he had in company executives and industry legends.
“For Netflix to give his life story to someone who has publicly attacked him for decades feels like an unnecessary and deeply personal affront,” the statement concluded, insisting that fairness and respect were expected.
Fans can catch the highly controversial docuseries when it premieres on Netflix this Tuesday.
