Cynthia Erivo, who is preparing for the second installment of Wicked, has gone viral after a clip of her full makeover circulated on social media.
The 37-year-old star shows just how committed she is to playing Elphaba, sitting for hours in the makeup chair to bring the character to life.
She chose practical makeup over CGI, insisting she wanted audiences to see “a green woman” rather than just a “green girl.”
Notably, a timelapse video shared exclusively with PEOPLE captures Erivo patiently enduring up to four hours of daily makeup, although hair and makeup designer Frances Hannon revealed it usually took around two and a half hours on average.
“It all depended on how much of her skin we had to cover,” Hannon explained.
The Outsider actress’s custom look, designed with Hannon and SFX expert David Stoneman, included layers of green primer, airbrushed “Cynthia Green” makeup, temporary tattoo eyebrows, and freckles to create a realistic, textured finish.
Moreover, green contouring added dimension to her skin, and the Dancing Through Life singer even interacted with her makeup on set, sometimes adjusting her eyes herself.
It's worth noting that the songstress also insisted on keeping her signature nails as part of Elphaba’s evolution.
“Some people wear makeup, I always have my nails done,” she said.
