Katy Perry had fans gasping at London’s O2 Arena on Monday night when a devoted admirer got down on one knee in front of thousands, only to be politely turned down.
The 40-year-old pop superstar was performing her The Lifetimes Tour when Darren Trenchard, a nervous but determined fan, was invited on stage.
In front of the spotlight and a packed arena, he popped the question: “Will you be my wife?”
Darren, a divorced engineer, later told the Daily Mail: “It was a bit of a risky move. I felt embarrassed and nervous, but she was lovely. We even had a little chat off the microphone. She looked glamorous and amazing – it made our night!”
Darren had attended the concert with his three daughters, Bethany, 16, and twins Nicole and Sophie, 22.
He admitted he’d “always joked that I would make Katy my wife one day.”
Despite his bravery, Perry laughed off the proposal, teasing: “I wish you’d asked me 48 hours ago… but not anymore!”
Fans couldn’t help but speculate about the Roar singer’s love life, with rumours swirling about her relationship with former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
The songstress, mother to four-year-old Daisy with ex-fiance Orlando Bloom and previously married to Russell Brand, seemed unfazed by the on-stage spectacle.
Katy Perry and Justin Trudeau have not officially confirmed a romantic relationship, leaving fans to speculate on the true nature of their bond.
However, speculation about their romance has been growing due to several public sightings and interactions.
The rumours intensified when photos emerged of Perry and Trudeau sharing a kiss aboard her yacht off the coast of Santa Barbara.
