Diane Keaton’s passing at 79 has sent shockwaves through Hollywood, as those close to the Oscar-winning star reveal her health took a very sudden downturn in the months leading up to her death.

The Annie Hall and First Wives Club star’s death was confirmed by her family on Saturday, October 11, with a request for privacy as they grieve.

While no official cause has been revealed, insiders told People magazine that her health “declined very suddenly” in recent months, a heartbreaking turn for someone long admired for her energy and spirit.

“It was so unexpected,” a source said.

“She was such a strong, vibrant woman. Even her closest friends didn’t fully know what was going on because she kept everything very private.”

Earlier this year, the Oscar winner sparked concern when she put her beloved Brentwood home up for sale, despite once calling it her “forever” house.

Locals also noticed she’d stopped her daily dog walks, once a familiar sight, always in her trademark hat and sunglasses.

“She was eccentric in the best way,” a neighbour shared.

“Always kind, always funny. She’d chat to her dog like he was human. She was one of a kind.”

A friend added: “Diane lived life entirely on her own terms — funny, fearless and utterly herself until the very end.”

For those unfamiliar, Keaton is survived by her two adopted children, Dexter, 29, and Duke, 25.

Why didn't Diane Keaton ever marry?

Diane Keaton never married, and over the years she has spoken candidly about her reasons.

She often explained that her choice had little to do with a lack of opportunity and more to do with her independent nature and personal fears.

Keaton has admitted that she valued her freedom too much to compromise it for marriage, once saying, “I don’t think it would have been a good idea for me to have married. I’m just too independent.”

She also confessed to having a fear of deep emotional intimacy, which made long-term relationships difficult for her.

Though she had meaningful romances with stars like Woody Allen, Warren Beatty, and Al Pacino, none led to marriage.
