The View ladies had maintained silence ever since Jimmy Kimmel Live!’s suspension became public, drawing criticism from the audience.
On Monday, Sept. 22, panellists Whoopi Goldberg, Ana Navarro, Sara Haines, Sunny Hostin, and Alyssa Farah Griffin shared their views on Jimmy Kimmel’s controversy.
The opinions of the ladies came after the chair of the Federal Communications Commission suggested that ABC should "look into" their talk show program next.
The View staff had remained silent in two consecutive episodes following the announcement of Kimmel’s long-running late-night program shutdown.
The panellists discussed Kimmel’s pause from ABC and the remarks the host made about the man who shot Charlie Kirk, which resulted in his suspension.
Opening the show, Goldberg admitted the panel had “taken a breath to see if Jimmy [Kimmel] was going to say anything about it” first. “I mean, look, did y’all really think we weren’t going to talk about Jimmy Kimmel? I mean, have you watched the show over the last 29 seasons? You know, no one silences us,” she said.
“…We did the same thing with Stephen Colbert. Then, our show was taped on Friday. But we are live here today,” Goldberg continued. “And we’re getting into it now.”
Goldberg and her co-hosts defended free speech amid the Kimmel controversy, stressing that while shows can be cancelled or personalities removed, the government should never pressure voices into silence.
Navarro linked the issue to her experience under dictatorships, warning that silencing the media is a hallmark of authoritarianism.
The panel urged viewers to demand truth, courage, and protection of First Amendment rights, questioning how the man in charge of the nation still does not understand how the First Amendment works.
