Actor Alan Tudyk sat down for an interview on the Toon’d In with Jim Cummings podcast where he revealed a shocking fact about the I, Robot movie.
Explaining that he had been dropped from the promo for receiving a better reception than lead Will Smith in the screenings, he said, “A lot of people did not know I did Sonny the Robot in ‘I, Robot,’ and there is a reason. They were doing test audiences for the movie, and they score the characters in this kind of test screening. I got word back: ‘Alan, you are testing higher than Will Smith.’ And then I was gone. I was done. There was no publicity, and my name was not mentioned.”
He continued, “I was so shocked. I was like, ‘Wait, nobody is going to know I’m in it!’ I put a lot into [that performance]. I had to move like a robot. At the time, I was very upset.”
“Del Spooner investigates the murder of Dr Alfred, who works at US Robotics, with the help of a robopsychologist. He tries to deduce if a robot has violated the laws of robotics and killed him,” reads the synopsis of the movie.
Tudyk's role as Sonny was one of the earliest depictions of a full CGI character in a major Hollywood production, and it was followed by his later major voiced works like Rogue One and Frozen.
