Leonardo DiCaprio revives decades-old passion project with Netflix

Leonardo DiCaprio and Greg Berlanti are teaming up with Netflix to adapt the cartoon series, Captain Planet and the Planeteers, into a live-action film.

As per Variety, the film is being written by Mrs. Davis, creator of The Big Bang Theory. DiCaprio’s Appian Way and Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions will also produce the movie.

The Titanic star has spent the past decade looking to adapt his beloved environmentalist series into a movie.

In 2016, Appian Way came on board with Glenn Powell to write and lead the film; however, the film was left in development till 2023.

Created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner, Captain Planet and the Planeteers ran between 1990 and 1992.

It was an ‘edutainment’ series that followed five youngsters who raised awareness about environmental issues.

DiCaprio has been an advocate for climate change and even chaired the national Earth Day in 2000, where he interviewed Bill Clinton.

Moreover, in 1988, the film producer established the ‘Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation’, a non-profit organisation devoted to promoting environmental awareness.

He awarded over $80 million in grants and funded 200+ environmental projects in 50 countries.

Currently, Leonardo DiCaprio is preparing for his upcoming action thriller film, One Battle After Another, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson.

The film is slated to release on September 26, 2025.
