'Top Gun 3' has been confirmed with Cruise set to reprise his role as ‘Maverick’
Tom Cruise reportedly unleashed his fury over the controversial idea of bringing the deceased actor’s character using Artificial Intelligence (AI) during a Top Gun 3 meeting.
The Mission Impossible star burst with wrath and rejected the idea of bringing back Val Kilmer’s character using AI.
Kilmer, who died on April 21, 2025, starred as ‘Iceman’, a rival character to Cruise’s ‘Maverick’ in both Top Gun movies.
According to Daily Mail, an insider revealed that upon hearing the controversial idea, the 62-year-old Hollywood icon jumped angrily from his seat and rejected the idea.
“You could almost hear a pin drop and see steam coming out of his ears,” the insider revealed the aftermath of the 4-time Academy Award winner’s response.
Tom believes that AI would 'bastardize' everything Kilmer stood for as co-star and a friend.
However, Kilmer has previously allowed recreation of his voice through AI as the actor was suffering from throat cancer. At that time, he said, “I am grateful to the entire team at Sonantic (London-based AI firm) who masterfully restored my voice in a way I’ve never imagined possible.”
Kilmer last appeared on screen in Top Gun: Maverick (2022) before succumbing to pneumonia at the age of 65.

No official release date for Top Gun 3 has been announced, the sequel has been confirmed with Cruise set to reprise his role as ‘Maverick’.
