Shakira lashed out at US President Donald Trump over controversial policies regarding immigrants. The Colombian born music icon is herself an immigrant living in the USA since mid-1990s.
The 48-year-old songstress got candid about her experience of living under the Trump administration, saying, “We need to raise our voice and make it very clear that a country is allowed to change its immigration policies but it isn’t allowed to subject anyone to inhumane treatment.”
In an interview with BBC News, the Waka Waka singer said, “I moved to the US when I was 19, just like many other people, looking for a better future.”
She also expressed thoughts on recent US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids, saying, “It means living in constant fear. And it’s painful to see,” adding that immigrant communities need to remain united now more than ever.
This criticism by the music icon comes in the wake of the Trump administration’s intensified crackdown against alleged immigration violations.
In the first 100 days of the Trump administration, ICE released stats revealing the arrest of 66,463 illegal aliens and $1 million fine for businesses hiring illegal immigrants.
