Pop star Sabrina Carpenter announced her new album, based on 12 songs and titled Man’s Best Friend, on Wednesday with a cover picture that sparked controversy.

The cover in question shows Sabrina kneeling on all fours while a faceless man pulls her hair.

Ever since the album was announced, fans have criticised the singer for over-sexualising herself; some say that she is reviving “tired stereotypical tropes” about women.

Glasgow Women's Aid, which was established during the second wave of the women’s liberation movement, was one of the leading organisations that strongly accused the singer of “reducing women to pets” in her new album cover.

The organisation said: “Sabrina Carpenter’s new album cover isn’t edgy, it’s regressive.”

They said that her pose—on all fours while a man pulls her hair—isn’t “subversion.”

“It’s a throwback to tired tropes that reduce women to pets, props, and possessions and promote an element of violence and control. We’ve fought too hard for this,” the organisation claimed.

They further added that even though Sabrina’s brand follows a retro glam approach, no one needs to bring back “tired stereotypes of women.”

“Sabrina is pandering to the male gaze,” they asserted, “and promoting misogynistic stereotypes, which is ironic given the majority of her fans are young women!”

“Come on, Sabrina! You can do better!” the organisation encouraged the singer.
