Global chart-topper Ed Sheeran, who was born and raised in England, has recently revealed the Irish influence on his identity.

The Grammy-winner described himself as “culturally Irish,” although he is British-born, on the latest episode of The Louis Theroux Podcast.

Brought up in Suffolk, the Shape of You hitmaker explained that his father was from Belfast, which is why much of his childhood was spent in Ireland.

“I class my culture as Irish,” Sheeran said on the podcast. “I think that's what I grew up with. My dad's family is... he's got seven brothers and sisters. We'd spend all of our holidays in Ireland.”

The record-breaking artist shared that he gained his early musical experiences from Ireland and grew up with traditional music in the house.

Furthermore, the Grammy-winner said he was “really proud” of his Irish cultural roots.

“And I feel like just because I was born in Britain doesn't necessarily mean that I have to just be [British],” Sheeran confessed. “There are loads of people I know that are half this or quarter that. I don't think there are any rules to it. It should be how you feel, how you were raised, and what you lean into.”

When the host asked if he gets love from Ireland, the Grammy-winner called the country his second home.

“I'd say it's basically my second home, musically,” Sheeran said. “I'd say Ireland is the place where I am most successful musically.”
