Disney has released the live action adaptation of the beloved animated original, Lilo & Stitch.

Notably, this comes after what is being called Disney’s biggest live action failure, the Snow White film starring Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot.

“A lonely Hawaiian girl befriends a runaway alien, helping to mend her fragmented family,” reads the simple synopsis of the new film.

The response from critics has been less than ideal, as The Guardian called it a “monstrosity” and Vulture commented that the whole thing had been “not a good idea.”

However, sometimes audience reviews differ greatly from the ones from critics, so what is the general public saying?

One viewer writes, “Felt original and authentic. You will fall in love with Stitch, even more than before. This movie brings family and friends together. Can't wait to watch it again. Be prepared for some offbeat jokes, which are not always as fun as the original, but suit the concept very well. This one is for the real Lilo & Stitch fans. We laughed so much, but also wept some tears. Emotional, fun and crazy. The storyline has a surprising amount of depth, exploring themes like identity, belonging, and unconditional love.”

Another user pointed out certain flaws, “Very good remake unfortunately let down by it's rushed turbo speed start that felt like they were skipping important plot points in favour of the meeting between Lilo and Stitch occurring. After that it slowed right down and turned into a fantastic movie with a story that lives up to the original and respects it. Plus the ending is way better than the animation and actually made me weep deeply from inside the depth of my heart and soul.”

Some, however, expressed their exhaustion with Disney’s endless line of live action remakes, “It's not the worst live-action adaptation Disney has created but it does feel...unnecessary.

Some of the charm does remain intact like the original simple yet charming tale of Lilo and Stitch. The visual effects of Stitch is pretty good, alongside with the colors and production designs. Stitch's personality and charm still remains vibrant and charming. However, I have to ask myself that while I do appreciate it wasn't like a massive mess, it's not necessary for a remake. Disney live-action remakes have gotten so tiresome, to the point there isn't much to say really. Especially since the original isn't even that old.”

The verdict seems to be: could be the best, but certainly not the worst.

Lilo & Stitch is currently playing in theaters.
