Prince Harry’s latest outburst may have grabbed headlines, but the royal family’s united front during VE Day commemorations sent a loud and clear message: he’s been benched.
According to royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams, the Duke of Sussex was “totally sidelined” by the monarchy during a week that showcased historic appearances from King Charles, Queen Camilla, Prince William, Kate Middleton, and other senior royals, all just days after Harry’s controversial BBC interview.
“This was a show of royal solidarity,” he told The Express. “Harry’s ill-timed outburst has been totally sidelined.”
Fitzwilliams called the move a “devastating, unprepared” interview that drew attention away from the King’s historic upcoming trip to Canada and instead dominated royal news.
According to Fitzwilliams, the Sussexes’ behavior violates a core royal rule: never upstage other working royals.
“They simply don’t care,” he said bluntly. “The Sussexes have never abided by that rule.”
“Harry, who seemed angry, would not care if it did [overshadow VE Day].”
“The Royal Family symbolized national unity as they did in 1945,” he said. “Harry appeared petulant.”
And while Harry’s comments were “of international significance,” Fitzwilliams says they’ll take “considerable time to be forgiven”, if ever.
