Despite the explosive fallout between Prince Harry and the royal family, one commentator now believes the time may be ripe for reconciliation.
Writing for The Telegraph, veteran royal columnist Alan Cochrane reflected on Harry’s five-year estrangement from the monarchy, noting the ongoing frostiness between the Duke of Sussex and his royal relatives — particularly Prince William.
But in light of Harry’s recent court appearance and heartfelt remarks about the UK being his “home,” Cochrane suggests a royal thaw might be on the horizon.
“Harry has behaved badly – very badly even,” Cochrane admitted. “But who knows? We might see the beginning of the end of Harry’s war.”
The Duke, who is currently challenging a decision by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee (Ravec) to downgrade his security, made an emotional statement during his appeal hearing in London: “The UK is my home. The UK is central to the heritage of my children and a place I want them to feel at home as much as where they live at the moment in the US. That cannot happen if it’s not possible to keep them safe when they are on UK soil.”
Cochrane says the remark struck a chord — not just with the public, but possibly with King Charles too. While Charles did not meet with his son during Harry’s UK trip this week due to his state visit to Italy, many believe the King would still “cut Harry some slack,” even if William remains more reluctant.
Reconciliation won’t be easy, Cochrane cautioned, but added: “It is past time for a rapprochement in the House of Windsor. For that to happen, Harry must show he wants to be part of it.”
He also acknowledged Meghan Markle's role in the royal family’s rift, stating, “Any number are prepared to blame Meghan for much of the family’s ills.” Still, he emphasized Harry’s unwavering loyalty to his wife and said that moving forward requires maturity from both sides.
Prince Harry is currently appealing a 2023 High Court decision that ruled against him receiving full police protection while visiting the UK.
At the heart of the case is Ravec—the Executive Committee for the Protection of Royalty and Public Figures—which downgraded his security following his and Meghan Markle’s 2020 exit from senior royal duties.
During today’s proceedings, Home Office lawyer Sir James Eadie KC defended the decision and stressed that the fallout from security rulings ultimately rests with the Secretary of State. He also underscored Ravec’s role as an expert body handling sensitive matters, including national security.
This legal showdown comes just one day after Harry revealed to the court that he and Meghan “felt forced” to step back from royal duties, believing the institution failed to adequately protect them.
