How Kate Middleton played key role in shutting down Meghan Markle, Harry's allegations

Prince William and Kate Middleton have reportedly formed a "totally united front" in response to their treatment by Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, particularly following the bombshell Oprah Winfrey interview in 2021, according to a royal expert.

During the controversial interview, Harry and Meghan made several claims about the Royal Family, including how Kate made her cry before her wedding to Harry and about conversations happening regarding how dark their son Archie’s skin tone would be before his birth

While the royal family usually never responds to such allegations, the explosive nature of the interview led to an unprecedented response from Buckingham Palace.

In a rare official statement, the palace said the family was “saddened” to hear about Harry and Meghan’s struggles—but also included the now-famous phrase: "Recollections may vary."

According to royal expert Valentine Low, in an updated edition of Courtiers: The Hidden Power Behind the Crown, Princess Kate played a key role in crafting the firm but diplomatic phrase.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams praised Kate and William’s handling of the fallout, telling Express.co.uk: "Whether or not she was responsible for the unerring riposte to Harry and Meghan’s subversive appearance on Oprah, 'some recollections may vary', as has been reported, there is little doubt that she and William have a totally united front against the way both he personally and the Royal Family in particular, were betrayed by the Sussexes."

He also emphasized the strength of their relationship, adding: "She and William complement each other so wonderfully well. This is clear from their body language, their delight in sporting rivalries in public which gives them an opportunity to show off their sense of fun, and the way they so clearly relate to the charities they have chosen."

What have Meghan Markle and Prince Harry been up to since their royal exit?

Since stepping back as senior royals in January 2020, Harry and Meghan have built their own brand outside the monarchy. They released a Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, in which they discussed their experiences within the Firm. 

Harry also published his tell-all memoir, Spare, in January 2023, detailing his strained relationship with Prince William and his opinions on Queen Camilla. Meanwhile, Meghan has been working towards her lifestyle brand, As Ever, and also released a Netflix show earlier this month, titled, With Love, Meghan.
