Shocking revelations about Matthew Perry’s tragic death have come to light following the release of a new documentary on Tuesday.
The documentary, Matthew Perry: A Hollywood Tragedy, features the Friends star’s attorney, Martin Estrada, who provides new insight into Perry’s case as he oversaw the investigation.
Speaking to The New York Post, Estrada disclosed that Perry had been administered 27 doses of ketamine, raising serious concerns about medical negligence and drug distribution.
"People should have known much better," Estrada said, emphasizing the reckless actions that contributed to Perry’s death.
Authorities have now charged five individuals linked to Perry’s fatal overdose, including: two doctors, Perry’s assistant, Kenneth Iwamasa, his acquaintance, Erik Fleming, and a drug dealer known as the ‘Ketamine Queen’.
According to an unsealed indictment from August, Iwamasa and Fleming collaborated with doctors Salvador Plasencia and Mark Chavez to secure large quantities of ketamine for Perry in the weeks leading up to his death.
The so-called ‘Ketamine Queen’, identified as Jasveen Sangha, has been charged as the supplier of the ketamine that ultimately led to Perry’s overdose.
Estrada stated in the documentary: "Dr. Plasencia was very clear in text messages… that he saw this as an opportunity to make a lot of money in a short amount of time, and he allegedly did just that."
Estrada made it clear that the legal system is shifting its focus away from victim-blaming and towards holding drug dealers accountable.
"In the past, we used to call these things overdose deaths and do more blaming of the victim. We don't do that anymore. We blame the drug dealers, the drug sellers, for taking advantage of those addiction issues to cause death or serious injury, and that's why we bring these cases."
He added: "The big takeaway from this case is that when people involved in reckless activity, whether that be drug dealing or other activity, cause the death of others, there needs to be accountability."
As investigations continue, the documentary sheds new light on the tragic circumstances surrounding Perry’s final days—and the people who may have played a role in his untimely death.
Matthew Perry passed away on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's Office autopsy report, the actor died of "acute effects of ketamine” and subsequent drowning. Perry's body was discovered floating in a hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home.
