Former Disney Channel star Alyson Stoner, aged 29 and preferring they/them pronouns, has expressed their belief that their career was impacted by coming out as queer.
In a 2018 essay for Teen Vogue, Stoner revealed their experience of falling in love with a woman and embracing an attraction to individuals across different gender identities.
However, the journey towards this realization was described as "nerve-racking" by Stoner.
"The reason I ended up doing it was because my girlfriend at the time, we reached a point in our relationship where it felt like it was a disservice to her for her to be hidden, right?" Stoner told Spencewuah on I’m Literally Screaming podcast.
"Like, that, that didn't feel good for her, it didn’t feel fair. And even though there were other like pressures and considerations for me to be public, I felt like, OK, I wanna … I wanna do this."
During that period, she revealed that they sought advice from their managers, including Kevin Jonas Sr., father of the Jonas Brothers, with whom Stoner had previously worked on the movie Camp Rock alongside the talented sibling trio.
They shared that the experienced manager provided them with unwavering love, support, and guidance, helping them comprehend the potential impact on both public perception and employability in the entertainment industry.
Stoner disclosed, "I did end up getting fired from a children's show because they felt that I was unsafe, now that they knew I was queer, to be around kids.
So there was like, definitely discrimination." Despite facing this alleged discrimination, she remains steadfast in their belief that they made the right decision.
