Cole, Dylan Sprouse were 'forced' into acting by 'financially irresponsible' mom

Cole Sprouse is opening up about a rather disturbing reason he started acting.

During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast earlier this week, the 30-year-old actor revealed that he and his twin brother Dylan were “forced” into acting by parents Melanie Wright and Matthew Sprouse. 

“My mother was an incredibly wonderful and artistic woman, but she was financially the most irresponsible woman ever,” the Suite Life of Zach & Cody alum explained, noting that their mother’s financial instability stemmed from mental health and addiction issues.

“I think it was the consequence of some alchemy of addiction and mental instability, and it's probably the greatest wound in my life,” he shared.

Cole and Dylan’s parents divorced when they were only one, and their father eventually ended up getting custody.

“When my father was given forced custody, we had pretty much lost everything from the [earliest] parts of our career.”

In another interview, the Riverdale star recalled the brothers being “put into acting when we were 8 months old by our mother because we needed money.”

The actor explained that he “never made the decision to join the arts or acting specifically. And so it was never really my passion.”
