Whoopi Goldberg revealed she is currently stranded in Italy after an eruption of Mount Etna disrupted travel and forced airport closures in Sicily.
The View moderator shared the update in a video message played during the show’s July 6 episode explaining why she was absent from the panel following the Fourth of July break.
“I am in Sicily right now, and Mount Etna, who is one of our active volcanoes here in Italy, decided to go off today,” Goldberg said while speaking from a hotel balcony.
The Oscar-winning actress and television host said she had spent much of the day trying to make her way back to the United States but local airport closures had left her unable to travel.
The 70-year-old Goldberg told viewers that “all of the airports are closed here,” meaning she would remain stuck in Sicily until flights resumed.
“So, I will be back as soon as I can,” she said, before joking about the dramatic situation. “I know that we got all kinds of stories about our different vacations. I think my story just takes the cake! A volcano ate my homework!”
Back in New York Joy Behar filled in as moderator for Monday’s episode of The View joining co-hosts Sunny Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin at the table.
Goldberg did not say when she expects to return but assured viewers she would be back as soon as travel becomes possible.
