Keke Palmer has opened up about the darker side of growing up in the spotlight.

The former child star admitted that life as a young TV sensation often felt “dehumanising”.

The 32-year-old actress revealed she was raised in a struggling suburb of Illinois where food was scarce, and performing became a lifeline for her family.

Her fortunes changed dramatically after landing breakout roles in Nickelodeon’s hit sitcom True Jackson, VP and the musical TV movie Rags, which catapulted her into fame as a teenager.

Speaking to Variety, Palmer reflected on how the entertainment machine treats young performers.

She explained that working on major kids’ networks like Disney and Nickelodeon often made her feel less like a person and more like a product being sold to audiences.

Despite the pressure, One of Them Days actress admitted the opportunity was impossible to walk away from once she saw how different life could be outside poverty.

She said that after experiencing success, there was no turning back, even during the moments when exhaustion set in.

Only in recent years has the Nope star realised the true cost of constantly pushing herself.

Looking back, she said she now understands how much that relentless pace took from her personally.

These days, Palmer is approaching life very differently, especially since welcoming her son, Leodis “Leo”, in 2024.

The Pickup actress, who co-parents Leo with her ex-partner Darius Jackson, says motherhood has made her far more intentional about how she spends her time.
