Jennifer Lawrence has opened up about what she believes was a missed opportunity in her acting career, losing out on a role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood because some online chatter labelled her “not pretty enough.”
The Oscar-winning star shared the revelation on the Happy Sad Confused podcast on January 12, recounting how Internet criticism may have swayed perceptions during casting.
According to People, Lawrence explained that Tarantino had considered her for the part of actress Sharon Tate in his 2019 film about Hollywood in the late 1960s.
However, she said that after widespread online opinion suggested she didn’t fit the physical image of Tate, the role ultimately went to Margot Robbie.
“Everybody was like, ‘she’s not pretty enough to play Sharon Tate,’ and then they didn’t,” Lawrence said, acknowledging she may have internalized the story from retelling it over time.
Moreover, the film’s cast, which also included Leonardo DiCaprio and Brad Pitt, was praised for its performances, with Robbie’s portrayal of Tate widely applauded.
At the time, Sharon Tate’s sister Debra publicly endorsed Robbie, citing her beauty and presence as fitting for the part.
Tarantino later clarified he had considered Lawrence for a different role, that of a Manson family member, but it ultimately didn’t work out.
Furthermore, he has spoken positively about her as an actress, underscoring respect for her talent despite the casting outcome.
