Oliver Hudson is opening up about the magic of Christmas with his father, Kurt Russell.
The Rules of Engagement actor shared with PEOPLE that spending the holiday at the family ranch in Colorado has become a cherished tradition for him and his own family.
“Christmas is a holiday and a tradition that cannot be separated one year on, one year off,” Hudson said, explaining that his wife, Erinn’s family, happily follows the arrangement.
The holiday spirit, he notes, was brought into their lives by Kurt, who has been with Goldie Hawn since 1983.
Reflecting on their first Christmas together, Hudson recalled waking up to sled tracks in the snow, a bell from Blitzen fallen off his collar, and a present stuck in the chimney.
“It was just so magical,” he said. The experience left a lasting impression, inspiring Hudson to pass on the festive enchantment to his kids Wilder, Bodhi, and Rio.
“Immediately you're instilling this into your kids where, ‘Wow, Santa's real,’” Hudson said, noting that he tries to keep the magic alive for as long as possible, letting his children believe for as many years as he can.
