SZA has recently taken the helm as artistic director of Vans, joining the footwear brand through a long-term creative collaboration.
The 35-year-old singer, who launched her own beauty line a few months ago, will manage forthcoming projects and assist in developing new collections.
Notably, the range features footwear and apparel reflecting her personal style.
The first project under the partnership is a campaign celebrating the black-and-white Knu Skool, which was originally launched in 1997 as a modern update to the Old Skool silhouette.
SZA, who has long favoured Vans’ Knu Skool and other classic styles, said she feels “free” collaborating with the brand.
The Snooze hitmaker also aims to showcase how creativity, community, and fashion can work together, adding that “bravery and curiosity are the cures for uncertainty.”
The announcement follows her entry into the beauty industry, starting with a lip gloss.
She described the venture as fulfilling a personal need, saying, “There was nothing that existed that did that for me and also made me feel moisturised.”
She chose the name SZA drawing from the Supreme Alphabet, created by former Nation of Islam members.
In this system, ‘S’ represents savior or sovereign, ‘Z’ stands for zig-zag, and ‘A’ signifies Allah.
