Sydney Sweeney, who rose to fame with her roles in Euphoria and Grey’s Anatomy, has always been relevant to gossip.
The actress recently landed in a controversy after her Republican registration came to light. This was later fuelled by the current president of the United States of America, who went on Truth Social to praise the “HOTTEST.”
However, there were several occasions in the past when Sydney’s actions were deemed unhinged and resulted in un-invited backlash. Like Kanye West, the Anyone But You lead has raised questions, “Why would she do that?”
While the motivation cannot be truly interpreted, list below are five instances when Sydney raised eyebrows with her debatable moves:
1. Mother’s 60th birthday
In August 2022, Sydney was blasted after she gave a sneak peek in to a cow-boy themed party of her mother, celebrating her 60th birthday. The attendees wore Blue Lives Matter garb and hats with MAGA written on them. In her Instagram post she clarified that the abbreviation means Make Sixty Great Again.
The update sparked a fierce backlash against the actress and questions were raised about her association. However, she addressed the hate and requested everyone to stop making “it political,” insisting it to be an “innocent” celebration.
Recently, the issue was recalled by many when her Republican voter’s registration went viral and she received praise by Trump in his post.
2. Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell relationship
The 27-year-old became the talk of the town for her flirty exchange with her co-star Glen Powell while she was engaged to Jonathan Davino. Although the two kept denying having a romantic bond, fans were convinced that they were dating. At SNL, the White Lotus performer poked fun with a witty response to her relationship rumours.
In March 2025, the speculation was further fuelled after Sydney and Jonathan decided to call it quits and go separate ways while staying “amicable.”
It was widely believed that the actress broke off her engagement to be with Glen. Few days after the news was confirmed, she appeared “unbothered” as she partied while being flirty with her celebrity friends at Stagecoach music festival.
3. Selling Bath water Bliss
People around the world called out Sydney for her “gross” and “creepy” collaboration with Dr. Squatch, a men’s grooming brand. She partnered with the company to release a soap made of her bathwater which was named "Bathwater Bliss." The brand claimed to have drops of her used water in the personal care product.
While the product sparked a debate, she admitted that it was “really fun, full-circle moment,” revealing that her obsessive admirers usually request for her “bath water.”
Meanwhile, this was not her first collaboration with the brand. They previously joined hands to advertise their body wash, taking a bubble bath and scolding “dirty little boys.”
4. Jeans ad
American Eagle hired the producer “temporarily” to endorse their jeans but with questionable dialogues. The actress zipped her bottoms as she breathily murmured about genes determining physical traits. A male voice-over was added: “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans.”
The campaign was posted on Times Square’s billboard. But the concept of the advertisement seemingly did not sit well with the general population and was instantly accused of glorifying a race.
Soon, the clothing line cleared the air that they meant to promote their jeans only. Despite the statement, the Eden star was heckled at the premiere of her upcoming project Americana for the controversy.
5. Sydney Sweeney’s interference between Jeff Bezos and Lauren
The Immaculate star’s appearance at billionaire Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez raised eyebrows as everyone questioned her being invited to the lavish event. At first, it was reasoned that she was there to “pay respects to the boss” as Jeff is the executive producer on Split Fiction.
Days later, it was confirmed that the rising star is starting a lingerie line, which she considered a very important project with the businessman's funds. According to the ongoing speculation, Lauren wasn’t sure about her husband’s involvement in this project. There is "definitely some tension."
