Music icon Daddy Lumba dies at 60

Ghanaians are currently mourning the loss of one of their greatest musical talents, Daddy Lumba, born Charles Kojo Fosu.

A statement from his family explained that he had passed in the hospital after suffering from a short illness.

Having had a four decade long career, he "was a cultural icon and his music touched countless lives", said the statement.

Director of diaspora affairs at the office of the president, Kofi Okyere-Darko called the singer "the greatest from Ghana in the last 100 years".

He had around a shocking 33 albums and over 200 songs under his belt, with his art often touching on themes such as love, forgiveness, beauty, money and death.

President John Mahama paid tribute to Daddy Lumba with a statement, writing, "Lumba's unmatched musical genius provided the soundtrack to our lives, carrying us through various phases of life. The beats to his memorable songs may have died down, but his enduring legacy will echo through the ages."

Former Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia also joined in, saying that "his passing is indeed a huge blow not only to the music fraternity but the entire country".

Other artists including Sarkodie, Guru, Sista Afia, M.anifest were some of the first to pass along their condolences.
