Emmy-winning actress Julie Bowen shared her reaction when she learned about her character’s twisty storyline in Happy Gilmore 2, ahead of its July 25 premiere on Netflix.

Bowen is reprising her role as Virginia Venit, three decades after the original film.

In the film, her character was the love interest of Adam Sandler's titular role, Happy Gilmore.

However, in the first five minutes of Happy Gilmore 2, Virginia, now married to Happy and a parent to five kids, dies after being struck by a golf ball hit by her husband during a tournament.

"When I found out that I was killed on page 12, I started laughing," the actress shared with PEOPLE. "I was on vacation with my family, and I had no Wi-Fi. I could barely read this thing. I only had my phone, and I was like, 'Am I seeing this right?' Trying to blow it up."

The Emmy-winner said with a laugh that she thought, “Oh, yeah, I'm dead. And he kills me,” referring to Adam’s character.

"Then I just started laughing. I just started laughing and laughing, and Adam was trying to get through to me," Bowen said. “I was on an island with no Wi-Fi and barely any cell, and we finally connected."

She made a statement about Adam’s role, joking, "I go, 'I don't care. It's great. Happy can't be happy.’"
