James Middleton has opened up for the first time about how Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis deeply affected the wider Middleton family.
The Princess of Wales, 43, revealed her cancer battle last year and is now thankfully in remission, slowly resuming public duties.
Speaking to The Times, Kate’s younger brother, 38, reflected on the emotional toll the news took on their close-knit family.
“For her and her family it was a challenging time, and I know for us and our bigger family it was a challenging time, but I think it’s about communication and it's about offering support and help where you can,” James shared.
“Being there for someone is such an important part, and it doesn't necessarily have to be on your terms and it shouldn't be on your terms.”
James, who has been candid about his own mental health journey over the years, has previously spoken about his struggles with clinical depression, ADD, and dyslexia.
In his bestselling memoir Meet Ella: The Dog Who Saved My Life, he detailed how his beloved cocker spaniel, Ella, helped him navigate through some of his darkest days.
During the interview, James also credited Prince William and Princess Kate’s mental health campaign, Heads Together, as a key influence in encouraging him to seek help during his own battles with suicidal thoughts.
“I was aware of what they were doing. It was sort of the general message of, you know, it’s OK to not be OK,” he explained.
