Eddie Murphy receives Golden Globe award, quips about Will Smith Oscar slap

Eddie Murphy joked about the famous Oscar slap referencing Will Smith while accepting his Golden Globe award 2023.

At the 80th annual Golden Globes ceremony on Tuesday night, Murphy, 61, received the Cecil B. DeMille Award. After his speech, Murphy shocked the audience with a joke about the 2014 Academy Awards and the time Will Smith hit Chris Rock on stage over a remark about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith.

"I've been in show business for 46 years, and I've been in the movie business for 41 years, so this has been a long time in the making and greatly appreciated," Murphy started his speech, praising his girlfriend Paige Butcher and his 10 "amazing" children.

He added, "I've been doing this for a long time so I could literally stand up here and keep saying names until they play the piano, but I'm gonna wrap it up and just say something to all the new up-and-coming dreamers and artists that are in the room tonight. I wanna let you know that there is a definitive blueprint that you can follow to achieve success, prosperity, longevity and peace of mind."

Murphy then shared that blueprint that he has followed his "whole career," noting: "It's very simple, just do these three things: Pay your taxes, mind your business — and keep Will Smith's wife's name out your f---ing mouth!"

Rock, 57, joked about Jada's shorn head during the Oscars in March of last year. 54-year-old Smith yelled from the front row prior to entering the stage and hitting Rock: "Keep my wife's name out your f---ing mouth!"
