Ryan Gosling has opened up about his unusual “trauma” when it comes to wearing wigs on-screen.
The 45-year-old Hollywood heartthrob donned a faux shoulder-length wig and a bushy beard for his role as science teacher Ryland Grace in Project Hail Mary, where he first appears as a “space caveman”.
But he admits he’s been wary of wigs ever since a disastrous moment on the set of 2015’s The Big Short.
Speaking on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday, Ryan recalled: “I have a little bit of trauma because I went for a bit on this film, The Big Short.
And when I stepped out in my wig and in costume, and I ran into Steve Carell, who was the first person I saw, he just stared at me. And he said, ‘Never do this again.’ I was like, ‘Damn it.’”
He added with a laugh: “It’s the last thing you want to hear from a scene partner! Never do this again – and I didn’t until now!”
Seth Meyers joked that the pair must have avoided each other after that, to which the Barbie star deadpanned: “I never spoke to him again.”
In Project Hail Mary, his character embarks on a daring mission in space to save Earth from extinction, forming a bond with a loveable alien named Rocky.
Space-themed films have long fascinated La La Land actor, who previously starred in First Man and is set to appear in the upcoming Star Wars: Starfighter.
He told the BBC: “Space can be hard to understand, but it’s important to make it accessible.'
